OUR STORY
A WELCOME FROM MATHEW
"My family has lived and worked on Moel Famau for almost half a century. My Taid established a thriving farm, milking 100 cows and rearing 200 sheep across 140 acres. In 1991, my father, Gareth, diversified from farming to establishing a sawmill on the site. Together, we have built a thriving enterprise renowned for its high-quality timber products, firewood and horse bedding.
In 2023, following the national pandemic, my wife Sioned and I decided to share this beautiful location with the wider public. With a young family of our own, we were inspired to create an experience that would captivate children with fun and adventure while offering adults a tranquil setting to unwind and escape the pressures of everyday life.
We came across six miniature Mediterranean donkeys in need of rehoming, and after learning about the remarkable benefits of spending time in their company, we welcomed them into our care. Since then, our herd has grown to eight, enabling us to attend local shows, schools, and care homes across the region, as well as invite visitors to share in the joy they bring at our site.
We look forward to welcoming you to Moel Famau Donkeys. Situated in the foothills of Moel Famau with far-reaching views of the Clwydian Range and eight delightful donkeys, we offer you a special place to enjoy the outdoors and connect with nature.”
THE TRAIL
We offer various experiences for you to enjoy. The full trail is roughly one mile long and, at its highest point, reaches 1,000 feet above sea level. The first half of the walk involves a gradual climb overlooking Llanferres village, Loggerheads and Colomendy. After a short, steady ascent, we see Flint, Deeside, the Wirral and Liverpool. You can take photos with the donkeys and enjoy the views from our custom, handmade benches.
Nature lovers will be astounded by the variety of trees as we wander. Ancient sycamore, beech and ash trees stand tall and strong along the trail. As keen conservationists, we are proud of our relationship with the Wildlife Trust, North Wales, which planted silver birch, oak, rowan, hornbeam, hazel, and Scots pine on our land to reduce flooding further down the River Alyn. We have also planted wildflowers along the trail to improve the local biodiversity and have honeybees working hard in hives situated on our site. If you would rather focus solely on the donkeys, we offer regular Meet The Donkeys experience where you can groom and care for the herd in the stable.
